Rusty Spotted Cats
Heard the name of a street cat? It’s the same as the rusted spotted cat. A little cat, wild in nature. One of the tiniest members of such cat species, the rusty spotted cat has only been documented historically in India and Sri Lanka. They have a physique that is slim and smaller than a domestic cat. A smaller, “washed-out” variation of the leopard cat, its thicker, rustier-coloured tail is almost twice half the size of its body and has fuzzier markings.
There are four darker stripes that extend from their neck to the top of their heads, as well as two dark streaks on their faces. This cat has rather large eyes with amber to greyish brown irises. Their slender, rounded ears have light-coloured basal patches and rufous grey on their backs.

The Rusty Spotted Cat Distribution
Previously believed to exclusively occur in moist woods, the rusty spotted cat is only found in Sri Lanka and India. However, recent records show that it also lives in dry forest areas, bamboo trees, forested grasslands, arid scrubland, and rocky hill slopes. They presumably don’t exist in evergreen woods since they like rocky terrain and dense flora.
Rusty Spotted Cat Habitat And Lifestyle
Rusty spotted cat is a solitary animal that inhabits woodlands and, more lately, human-dominated agricultural areas. They are thought of as terrestrial and have an affinity for trees. They spend much of their time inside a hollowed log, woodland, or tree thicket and appear to be primarily nocturnal. Because of its climbing prowess, it is believed that this cat hunts at night on the ground and climbs to avoid enemies and hide in branches.
Rusty spotted cats use urine to mark their territory, much like other cats do. These kitties have been spotted in caves and taking refuge in the cracks between large stones in Eastern Gujarat, India. These creatures ambush their prey by hiding in grass and bamboo clumps, or from high tree branches, and then leaping straight onto the floor on top of it.
Nutrition and Diet
Rusty spotted cats are elusive and prey on frogs, rodents, and small mammals that surface after heavy rains. They also occasionally consume household ducks and livestock.
Mating Patterns
Rusty spotted cat is speculated to be polygynous. Males in zoos, however, are allowed to remain with their partners after mating and the birth of kittens. It was noted that a male fed his babies meat at the West Berlin Zoo and shielded them from zookeepers, which may indicate that they have a monogamous mating arrangement. All year long, cats with rusty spots will mate. One or two kittens are born in an isolated den, similar to a shallow cave, after a gestation period of approximately 67 days.
At roughly 28 to 32 days, the young start to leave the den. Young are able to descend down steep branches head-first between 35 and 42 days of age. Play is the main focus of a mother cat’s interactions with her kittens. Weaning begins between 35 and 42 days and is finished in 60 days.
Rusty Spotted Cat Kitten Population
Threats to the population
Deforestation and farming, which have resulted in significant habitat loss for the rusty spotted cat in both Sri Lanka and India, provide the biggest and most serious danger to these species. The market for cat skin is still rather active. In some places, rusty spotted cats are also targeted for food hunting and frequently murdered for stealing domestic livestock, particularly chickens.
Population Number
Rusty spotted cats appear to be rare practically everywhere they are found, per the IUCN Red List. There may be fewer than 10,000 mature members of the rusty spotted cat’s overall population. The IUCN Red List currently classifies this species as Vulnerable (VU) because its overall population is declining.
Environmental Niche
Rusty spotted cats play a crucial role in managing the numbers of small vertebrate prey species.
Rusty Spotted Cat Pet Fun Facts
- In Sri Lanka, cats with rusty spots are known as “Kola Diviya” or “Handun Diviya.”
- The Rufous cat and also the black-footed cat is the two tiniest cats in the world.
- Instead of the rusty marks that adults have, kittens have lines of black spots. The reddish coat appears as they mature.
- Kittens may jump about 50 cm from a height of about 2 m between both periods of 47 to 50 days.
- When their mother lies down after being active, rufous cat kittens first go to where she is. As the babies mature, they spend more time alone and on higher ledges.
- In contrast to these little, vivacious birds, the rusty spotted cat bears the unique moniker “hummingbird of the cat family” because of its size, speed, and agility. Read more...
